YON 2020 Day 334: Alyssa Figueroa, Nursing Student

A senior nursing student at Lorain County Community College, who is due to graduate in December of 2020, Alyssa Figueroa shares the reasons she chose nursing as her life’s work. She is eager to join the ranks of the nursing profession.

Ever since I was a little girl, I was a caring person. I had always put the needs and feelings of others before my own, regardless of whether that person was a complete stranger or a loved one. I constantly felt a strong sense of wanting to make people feel better even if that meant putting their needs before my own.

When I was eighteen years old, I spent several days with my aunt during the labor of her first-born child. My aunt had a difficult labor and delivery; however, her labor and delivery nurse was phenomenal at her job, and eased my aunt’s anxiety and pain throughout her care. She was attentive, caring, patient, wise, knowledgeable, an excellent advocate, inspirational, and an exceptional representation of how a great nurse should function. That wonderful nurse probably had no idea of the impact she had on my life. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to become a labor and delivery nurse so that I could put to use my ability to care for others and make them feel better during times in their life when they may need it the most.

I am currently in my last semester of nursing school and I have grown and experienced so much throughout my student nurse journey. It has truly been an honor to be a nursing student and have worked side by side with such wonderful instructors as well as nurses in the hospital. I perceive nurses as exceptional human beings. Nurses put their needs, wants, and wishes on hold, for the needs of others. I admire all nurses around the world, and I am proud to hopefully soon be able to say I too am a nurse.

At this point in my life I still aspire to be a labor and delivery nurse, and then possibly advance my knowledge/skills and become a midwife. However, after graduation I would like to work on a med-surg unit first. Throughout my time in nursing school I developed a liking for medical surgical nursing. I am excited to begin the next chapter of my life and am thankful that I have the opportunity to do so.
